Vehicle disputes / For sellers
Vehicle dispute support · Sellers

A buyer wants to reject the vehicle you sold.

A demand for a refund does not answer whether one is legally due. Whether you sold a vehicle privately or as a motor trader, we assess the actual transaction, the buyer's allegations and your position before you respond or agree to a remedy.

The position may be affected by the seller's true trading status, any finance agreement and the terms or statements made before the sale.

Two very different selling situations

Private sale or business sale?

We do not assume that every buyer's complaint is valid, or that a vehicle described as privately sold was legally a private sale. The starting point is to establish the seller's status and the terms of the agreement.

Genuine private sales

You sold your own vehicle

We assess what you said about the vehicle, what was agreed, what the buyer now alleges and whether any misdescription, misrepresentation, title issue or other obligation may arise.

A genuine private seller is not automatically subject to the same satisfactory-quality duties as a motor trader. But describing a transaction as “private” does not settle its legal status.

Dealerships and traders

You sell vehicles as a business

We consider rejection and refund demands, the vehicle's age and condition, the contractual documentation, the evidence of faults, previous repairs and the available commercial options.

Consumer-law obligations cannot simply be avoided by advertising a business sale as private. A seller's actual activities and involvement are relevant.

Why we examine both categories: Disputes sometimes turn on whether the seller was genuinely acting privately. We assess the actual facts without prejudging either the buyer's allegation or the seller's explanation. Purchaser services are explained separately here.
Seller assessment fees

Understand the demand before deciding how to respond.

For a short preliminary view without reviewing paperwork, choose the £50 Quick Check. If the buyer has already complained, sought rejection, supplied reports or involved a finance company, a £250 assessment of the documents and evidence is usually more appropriate.

What we review

There may be more than one party to the dispute.

The transaction

Who sold what?

Advertisement, sale terms, sales communications, payment trail, trading status and any third-party or finance involvement.

The allegation

What is the buyer claiming?

The alleged defect or misdescription, when it was raised, repair requests, inspection findings and the relief the buyer is seeking.

The response

What is proportionate?

The material strengths and risks of the seller's position, evidential gaps, practical options and what may need further negotiation or investigation.

After the assessment

Separate pricing for any further work.

If further assistance is justified, we can discuss a fixed-fee quotation for formal responses, dealer–customer negotiations, finance-provider correspondence or appropriate dispute resolution. Each subsequent stage is scoped and agreed in writing.

The initial assessment does not include taking over the dispute, contacting the buyer, monitoring deadlines or representing a seller in proceedings. Alternative funding, where appropriate and lawful, is considered separately.

The £50 Quick Check fee is credited towards a £250 Vehicle Dispute Assessment for the same matter. The assessment begins only once the terms, scope and payment have been agreed; further work requires separate instructions.
